How To Dress Like A Movie Star On The Red Carpet

The Red Carpet is a funny thing! Sure, the first you think of is royalty and then the celebs or maybe the reverse order – but the point is no matter what you think – it boils down to intense scrutiny – of your hair, your make up, your shoes, your accessories and most importantly your dress!

I love the way (most) celebs dress up for the Red Carpet – their infusion of grace, feminism and perfection all rolled up in one. Of course, they do have million dollar designers chalking up their dresses for them but then again who is to say that our local dress maker is not just as good! All you have to do is ask your dress maker to try and ape the dress you loved or as an alternative order a similar dress online. Just select one you loved celebrity cocktail dress snap and get similar dress from your tailor.  Even A lot of websites offer celeb imitation dresses – and for a lot cheaper!

Here are a few celebrities who so far have been creating perfection on the Red Carpet in 2011:

Teenager – Hailee Steinfeld

I adore this girl and her designer! It’s especially difficult for women in their ‘blooming’ stage to dress up and Hailee Steinfeld seems to have mastered the art perfectly (unlike Miley Cyrus and Lindsay Lohan). Her clothes are always appropriate for the occasion while simultaneously being perfect for a ninth or tenth grader. It’s cutesy without being sexy; never involves too much skin show, classy, confident and absolutely gorgeous! If ever there was a magazine launched solely for teenage girls, Hailee along with her dress sense would definitely make it to the cover.

Young adult – Blake Lively

Wikipedia claims the girl is 23 and boy does she dress up pretty! Of course she’s pretty and got a great television show to herself but this lady here knows how to play up her fantastic figure and legs! Though, I have to warn you that it’s not easy carrying off the stuff she does, because I know for a fact that if I shoved myself into what she wore I would look absolutely horrid!

Adult – Mila Kunis

Utterly gorgeous of course! With a face like hers you would never have to worry about what you’re wearing. Yet Mila is by far one of the best dressers there is today. She was just recently voted as the best dressed at the SAGs awards and then again in the running for best dressed at the Oscars! She is the one girl I know, who knows how to accessorize while simultaneously and perpetually having a great hair day! Another great celeb to take fashion advice from would be Zoe Saldanha!

Mature – Helen Mirren

Hot to look hot at 60? This woman is the most wonderful guide to looking utterly fantastic at any age. She carries herself well, dresses fantastically to suit her age and body. I have never seen her trying to act younger than her age in terms of her dressing nor have I seen her dressed in frumpy grandma clothes. Her dresses are elegant and regal, just the way mature women should dress!

The Ten Worst Dressed Oscar Celebs

The Oscars is not just a time to recognize the acting talents of the celebs but also their dressing talents. What they wear and who they come along with are probably more discussed than the awards themselves! As usual, there are those fantastic few like Helen Mirren, who never seem to go wrong; then there are those like January Jones who never seems to get it right and there are yet others like Madonna who have redefined ‘normal’ to include conical shape bustiers and high under wears.

Here is a list of the ten most horribly dresses celebs at the Oscars:

1. Anika Noni Rose

Satin, Miss Rose is your worst nightmare – especially if it seems to show off your belly button, makes your chest look a bit lopsided and is combined with some bright yellow feathers that look like a rip off from Cartoon Network.

2. Anna Hathaway

All I can say is that Anna Hathaway thought for some reason that the Oscars were devoid of chairs this year. So she decided to bring along her own comfy, little, built-in cushion.

3. Annette Bening

I don’t know. This doesn’t quite hit vintage as much as it hits look what my grandmother – a fan of the disco era – did when she found herself a set of extra beads. A Naeem Khan creation, this formal beaded evening dress has me utterly confused. It’s not absolutely terrible but it’s just not nice either. The whole get up and the overall look leaves me very very jumbled!

4. Cate Blanchett

Oops! Blanchett forgot it’s the Oscars! She still thought she was along the sets of ‘Elizabeth’. This is what I think – she woke up one fine morning and decided you know I think I should remind everyone just how good an actor I really am. Maybe if I dressed up like a Victorian housemaid I’ll remind everyone of just that!

5. Claire Danes

She does seem to remind me of a patient – one who was just up for examination at some chic, classy and very expensive doctor who has his hospital garb designed by some high standard designer.

6. Florence

Love the hair and err.. that’s where it ends! Her dress is rather confusing. It has lace, some corsetty ruffles and a pale nude color. I know – maybe Welch is playing Blanchett’s maid – the loyal one who will do anything for her employer.

7. Helena Bonham Carter

The red carpet would never be as interesting with a touch of ‘crazy’. HBC stole all the crazy limelight. She seems like a fun person though, one who could have you in splits when you are at a bar drunk off the hook.

8. Jena Malone

I seem to have a problem with semi-transparent see throughs. I hate them with as much zest as I love ruffles and that means a lot of zest! Malone looks like a 13 year old blend of Taylor Momsen and Madonna’s kid.

9. Joan Collins

The poor thing had to be rushed to the hospital because she was having dizzy spells. She later said that it was because she was wearing a dress that was too tight for her. Need I say more?

10. Madonna

The award undoubtedly goes to Madonna. She never fails to amaze me. Think about it – what does she have? High waist under wears and a few black bras. Yet, she creatively manages to combine them year after year to come out with something wackier than the previous!

The Ideal Celeb Dress Styles You Should Sport!

Celebrities always seem to get it right. Save for the occasional blooper they seem to know how to dress, smile walk the talk and talk the walk. Their confidence and sheer charisma makes plenty of little and not so little girls wishing that they were in their place.

True, they have the most expensive designers catering to their whims and fancies; but that does not take away from the fact that they too have their flaws. The secret lies in being able to flatter their best assets and conceal their flaws with style. Celebs have it the hardest. They are under constant scrutiny and their minutest little detail is noticed. In spite of that, they manage to look gorgeous at every single occasion.

It’s true, we don’t have a host of designers and fashion experts at our service but we have the power of observation and a keen eye. So here are a list of celebs, their body types and their best choice in clothing! Pick out which suits you the best and create your own style statement!

Celeb: Scarlett Johansson
Body type: hourglass figure

This is one celebrity who knows how to dress up. But then again she is blessed with a figure to die for. She has the typical hourglass figure where everything from tight sheaths to short dresses suit her. Johansson usually wears dresses with a belt that tightens around her waist. This accentuates her tiny waist and her ample bust and rounded hips! A celeb who rarely goes wrong, Scarlett Johansson simply rocked at the Golden Globes in her beautiful shimmery body hugging red carpet dress.

Celeb: Gwyneth Paltrow
Body type: skinny

Gwyneth Paltrow and her body have been making news for ages. It can’t be easy dressing up a body like that. If you notice, Paltrow always opts for dresses which fit her like a second skin and usually high necklines. This emphasizes her long body at the same time conceals her lack of assets.

Celeb: Amber Riley
Body type: plus sized

It’s tough for plus sized women to dress up. It’s even tougher when they are on the red carpet. Amid all the scrutiny and hoopla Amber Riley is one celeb who has managed to hold her own. She usually opts for empire waisted gowns with diagonal pleats and dark colors. They could be in shimmer or materials with a light sheen but the gowns she picks are more often than not fabulous.

Celeb: Jennifer Lopez
Body type: pear shaped

In my opinion, pear shaped celebs have it the toughest. They have to conceal those heavy thighs while at the same time look spectacular. Nobody plays it better than Jennifer Lopez. Right from figure hugging sheaths which flare at the hips to straight cut skirts, Jennifer Lopez sure knows how to play her cards right!

Red Cocktail Dresses – Why Celebs Love Them

It’s hard to pinpoint why celebs love red cocktail dresses so much. It could be because of the vibrant color or because it looks so sensational or because red is the latest color to hit 2011 or it could be because red speaks of boldness and passion. A cocktail dress in itself speaks of vigor and gorgeousness – add to it the potent color of red and you have yourself a bewitching effect. Here are ten celebs that have not only sported red cocktail dresses but carried it off with style!

1. Natalie Dormer

A very nice, very elegant, very simple, classy red plunging neck gown. Dormer is looking absolutely fantastic and regal in this mind blowing creation she recently sported at the BAFTAs.

2. Linda Graycocktail outfit

One simple word – wow! The off shouldered pleated pattern, the floral embellishment and the gorgeous fall of the red cocktail dress all add up to one simple word – wow!

3. Laila Aliparty wear

This has to be an example of the most deliciously, gorgeously, sensational cocktail dress in a deep maroon sported by a pregnant woman. Ali recently wore this number and she looks so stunning. Her simple accessories and the one shouldered look along with that beautiful baby bump had me clapping my hands for her and whooping in happiness.

4. Katrina Bowden

An utterly fabulous creation – especially for teen girls! It’s simple. The slight ruffles along the dress perfectly compliment her petite frame and the belt showcases her narrow waist. A great effort and kudos for the overall affect Katrina!

5. Eva Amurri

short cocktail dress

Just when you think you have seen it all, along come Eva in a rather adorable, completely off beat cocktail dress. Its asymmetrical hemline and that cute bow just add this ‘cute’ effect. A great creation and well carried off!

6. Audrina Patridge

long cocktail dresses

Sparkles – the true love of the red carpet. This gorgeous dual shaded deep red dress that Audrina Patridge recently wore calls out to me.  It makes me want to smile because the snug fit totally highlights her gorgeous figure and the shimmer on the dress totally lights up what could have been pretty boring!

7. Mila Kunis

party outfit

Of course this girl is exceptionally pretty. But this fantastic red dress she recently wore to the SAGs just took her prettiness to a whole new level! Voted across several sites as the best dressed of the SAGs its no wonder that she’s smiling so much these days. The credit rightfully goes to her oh so gorgeous red strapless gown. The specks and blends of nude and black only serves to add a spice to her entire get up.

8. Valerie Bertinelli

red carpet dress

Just look at Valerie looking all perky and smiley and why not? I would be too if I was looking as fabulous as her. Her red strapless gown looks absolutely fantabulous on her and flatters her skin tone perfectly.

9. Tina Fey

cocktail outfit

Spectacular in a completely unexpected manner, Tina Fey positively rocked at the SAGs.  It is one from the red lace long cocktail dresses . Beautifully carried off, this is one celeb who knows her style!

10. Julianna Margulies

cocktail gown

I unreservedly and absolutely love this on her. She looks so darn pretty and sophisticated in this. It reminds me of those hoity-toity upper class women who look their nose down on you – except Julianna looks sweet and charming!

The Best Dressed Teen Celebs

Celebs have it hard. Sure there is the fame and all that money but the glory has its dark side too. Imagine being scrutinized day in and out. Every little piece of clothing you wear, every lock of hair you cut, every smile and look you give – all of it captured, all of it discussed.

It’s hard enough being a celebrity without having the trouble of dealing with being a teen celebrity. Once upon a time, something as simple as an impish smile and a cute catchphrase was more than enough. Today, teen celebs have to watch what they say, wear and do. It can’t be easy for them to dress up. They have to strike that perfect balance. You can’t be too over dressed or adult like while at the same time you can’t look like a kid.

Here is a list of a few teen celebs, who seem to get it right most of the time:

Selena Gomez:

It must be pretty tough to grow out of Disney, because sooner or later you reach the “I’m not a girl, not yet a woman” time (Remember Britney) and that’s when the trouble starts. You cannot afford to look too adult too quick or too young for too long. Selena, here seems to have managed to get her look down pat! I admire her choice in outfit. She manages to look pretty and old enough without crossing over into the “look at me trying to be so mature” look.

Brenda Song:

It must be nice to know that you have both acting talent and the ability to dress well. Brenda looks perfectly cute in this green sheath and I love the sleeves which add that zing to the dress. Her accessories perfectly compliment what could otherwise have been a very monotonous dress

Emma Watson:

I love the fact that she wears pant suits with such panache and looks awesome in i. I love that she makes winter clothing so much fun and I love this gorgeous white gown she has on. She looks oh so pretty without overdoing it. Although, much as I absolutely adore Emma and want all the world of good for her, I would say that the slit is just a little too high up.

Emma Roberts:

I love this gorgeous dress worn by Emma Roberts. This is one of the best in one shoulder party dresses . It suits her perfectly. It compliments her thin bone structure and the mid-thigh ending flared dress adds to the beauty. I’m enjoying the lace bordering of her beautiful cocktail dress and the way it perfectly compliments her skin tone.

Jamie Lynn Roberts:

She has her work cut out for her, what with being the sister of the famous or must I say infamous Britney Spears, plus her pregnancy. But, she does have her style sense intact – thank heavens for that. The shorts jump suit she’s wearing is fresh and cute. It’s attractive and fun and she seems to be glowing in it (no pun intended).

Vanessa Hudgens:

She can sing, she can dance, she looks fab and her legs look fantastic. I like this girl. Vanessa may not make it big in Hollywood any time soon but she has that cute girly talent. The kind that makes you want to hold her and say – don’t worry bout what you read in the papers – you look fantastic!

Miley Cyrus:

I’m not too big a fan of Miley’s dressing but this outfit hear clearly deserves an applause. It’s got that toughish, sexy look that I’m absolutely liking, without being too overtly sexy. The lack of hair extensions are quite a refreshing change too!

Golden Globes Fashion Bloopers

The Golden Globes – for those who have just landed from Mars – is a film and TV awards show held annually in Hollywood. This year’s function attracted just a little fewer than 17 million viewers to the NBC network. To think that with such large audiences tuning in year after year all celebs would love to dress up like Katherine Zeta Jones. But (siiigh!) that is not to happen! Thanks heavens actually or at whose expense would I have so much fun?

Here are a few celebs that seemed to have come dressed up for the Golden Globes a little worse than host Ricky Gervais’ humor while conducting the ceremony.

Hayley Atwell:

Is it just me or does her dress look like it’s zipped up front the front and some of her lacy lingerie got stuck wham in the centre of it? Now Hayley is so beautiful, you’d think she could carry anything off – even something picked up from my 65 year old grandmother’s tailor but who would’ve thought that she actually did pick up the outfit from my Nana’s tailor. I swear my grandma has something like this and I know she picked up the outfit especially for funerals.

Jacki Weaver:

I bet Jacki Weaver is thinking, “So basically no one knows who I am anyway. Maybe the sea weeds and octopus shaped creatures on my dress may grab a little attention.” Really Jacki, silver earrings, black open toed shoes (which by the way seem to the only saving grace here) and my 4 year old niece’s pink hair clip on your hand really doesn’t seem to be working much for you.

Fergie:

Not a bad dress if you ask me, if you can excuse the fact that it seems two sizes too small for her. It would also help if Fergie decided to comb her hair once, just once!

Bryce:

This was her after party dress. I must remember to use this pic of Bryce the next time I’m writing tips about how not to have an overdose of cheap accessories. I think her dress is almost passable if only we could actually get a bit of a peek below all than chain.

Emily Blunt

I do have slightly mixed feelings for this dress. The more I look at it, the more I feel like I’m being transferred to fairy tale land with goblins and elves and pretty little fairies. At the same time, I also feel that the outfit slightly resembles a lot of bubble gum and strangely the lower part of her dress takes me back to when I was 5 years old and danced all over the house in my pink tutu. Then again, I feel like thank heavens she wore her petticoat below all that lace. Hmmmm!! I’m confused… very confused!

Bryce Dallas Howard

Yep!! I left this one for the end! I just had to. I’m sorry if I’ve scarred you for life with this rather ‘Vampirish I’m going to burst into flames’ dress but I had to share my sorrow. Yes, it does seem to have a tiny inspiration form Cher and Madonna but then again which pointy undergarment dress does not remind you of the latter?

The Vouge Of Celebrity

Celebrities have it pretty tough.. the women much worse. They have to look their best every single time, for every award function, for every public appearance even if they take their dog out to a walk.

Here is a list (in no random order) of what I think are some of the most well dressed celebs:

Anne Hathaway:

Anne wore this gorgeous outfit to the Love and Other Drugs premieres in Sydney in December and honestly, I think it’s her prettiest outfit yet! I love the retro look and the golden sequins. The mid-thigh hemline seems to do wonders for the dress. it flatters her perfectly and her arm candy ain’t too bad either (wink wink).

Hailee Steinfeld:

Now this is a 14 year old who knows how to dress! Her dress perfectly suits her age without making her look too cutesy and is the perfect choice for the National Board of Review in terms of color.

Yvonne Strahovski:

For those of you wondering where you’ve seen the face before, she’s the girl from Chuck. Undoubtedly she’s pretty as a pop but her dress is simply gorgeous. It defines her ‘oh so perfect’ body wonderfully while still providing that required bit of elegance. The color excites me along with the light ruffle. Her hair and shoes are working for the dress. Definitely fab!

Zoe Saldana:

Now that’s called pulling off a dress. The unusual leather mini dress looks terrific on her. Her funky accessories only add to the look – the jewelry has just the right amount of groove in it without going overboard. Her two-tone brown and burgundy shoes would probably not be an obvious choice but combined with the clutch and jewelry, id say Zoe here has managed to pull off the look quite fantastically!

Kristen Stewart:

I love the sparkles all over her mini dress. I love the way she’s carrying it off. I love how she’s making it look so easy. I love the black sash running through the outfit. I love that transparent layer of white. In short, I love Kristen Stewart’s look!

Helen Mirren:

Now that’s a lady with class! She’s seems to know just what she can carry off and what she can’t. She’s probably one of the few celebs, I know who doesn’t seem to be fighting age. (Actually with a bod like hers, I’m think we may have to redefine age). This outfit is proof that a 65-year old can look super hot and give a lot of youngsters a run for their money!

Khloe Kardashian:

It’s almost a relief to see one celebrity looking like she uses her money to purchase food. I love the way Khloe is carrying off this sweetheart neckline outfit. Its flattering to her full figure and looks quite ravishing too, no?

Jennifer Aniston:

I’m a fan of this woman. Other than the fact that she’s been blessed with the most wonderful hair she’s 40 something and can still carry off a tight short clingy dress like she’s just turned 20. The pleats and tiny bows of the dress along with the nude color looks fantastic. I’m completely digging the look!
